Definition:  The word of the day today is actually one that is made up of two words that are typically used interchangeably but often debated about in many communities: soda pop.

Soda pop is an informal word for a carbonated soft drink or carbonated water.

Etymology: Soda pop is the combination of two words, soda and pop, but all three words are actually used to mean the same thing. Soda or pop is what people typically use, but which one you actually use depends on your culture. The word soda is a late Middle English word derived from medieval Latin. The word pop came from a British poet in 1812, who wrote the following:

“A new manufacture of a nectar, between soda water and ginger beer, and called ‘pop,’ because ‘pop goes the cork’ when it is drawn.”
